Since I am a personal trainer, I am often asked… What is the Best Ab Exercise?

And my answer is often it depends. It depends on the goal. Now, I know most people want to know what is the best ab exercise to get rid of fat on their stomach, but unfortunately ab exercises by themselves do very little to help you get rid of stomach fat.

This is known as the spot reduction myth. Because of the powerful marketing companies, consumers continually think that they can work a spot on their body as magically melt fat away from that spot, but that is not how the body works.

Ab Exercises are useful for supporting good posture, preventing lower back pain, and improving function and sports performance. Ab exercises are not good for spot reduction of belly fat.

Okay, back to the best ab exercise

There was a study done called finding the safest abdominal challenge measuring work to compression ratio. This study looked at 9 ab exercises and compared the muscle work in the abs to the pressure in the lower back during each exercise.

According to this study, the exercise that worked the abdominal muscles the hardest while putting the least pressure on the lower back was crunches with the feet on a bench or ball. When the feet are lifted it takes away some of the arch in the lower back and takes some pressure off the joints.

In addition, the exercise that worked the abdominal muscles the hardest also put the most pressure on the lower back and that exercise was double hanging leg raises.

To determine which exercise is the best you must take into consideration the fitness goal. For example if someone has a slightly achy lower back, crunches with the feet up may be the best abdominal exercise because it works the abs really hard but doesn’t put a ton of pressure on the lower back.

However, if you are an athlete looking for serious core strength, double hanging leg raises might be the best ab exercise for you. Nearly all exercises have a benefit, so the most important thing is to be active and exercise. The best exercise for you may be the one that you like the most because you can consistently do it.

There are hundreds of variations of ab exercises that you can choose from. You can perform various forms of crunches, like regular crunches, oblique crunches or bicycle crunches. You can do leg raises and reverse crunches to emphasize the lower abdominal area. You can use a stability ball to do roll-ins or piques with your feet on the ball, or you can do your crunches on a stability ball for an added benefit.

And in regards to constructing your ab workouts, you will also find that there are hundreds of ways to create an effective ab workout. You can do straight sets and just focus on one exercise at a time. You can do super sets which pair two exercises together. Or you can do your ab workouts in circuit fashion by performing 3 or more exercises in a row with no rest in between. Each exercise and each workout gives you a slightly different fitness experience and result.

One of the many challenges men have is to decide what kind of workout they want to do to get a sexy six pack. One of the fears that many men suffer from is that they will work out for months on end and never see any results, or go back to the old way of doing things. So the question is, what are the best ab exercises for six pack abs?

The best way to explain this is to talk about what NOT to do. With that in mind, I’ll not talk to you about the top 5 mistakes most people make when they are trying to get ripped six pack abs, so you can save yourself the time and energy, by not making the same mistakes again.

Mistake #1: Imitating bad workouts you find on TV. This is a probable reason why you will not be able to burn the belly fat fast. Inexperienced people think that doing some simple workout, like they do on TV is the answer, because they have ripped abs and sexy bodies, and don’t know any better. What they don’t know is that most of the workouts on TV are ineffective and they actually got the abs working out the REAL way, and eating the RIGHT way.

And in fact, one of the WORST ab exercises you can do is the regular, repetitive crunch or sit-up. When you do this exercise you are not adding enough resistance to your stomach, and you are not burning belly fat efficiently either. (You should go behind the scenes and see them really work out! You’ll a totally different workout routine!)

Mistake #2: Trying to get ripped by only working out your abs. This is not the most effective way to burn belly fat! You want to keep a gradual increase in resistance and difficulty for your abs. That’s how you build size, which is what makes them come out from behind your belly fat.

So what ab exercises should I do? There are hundreds of exercises that are better for building abs. Some of them include doing a classic mountain climber, or doing the plank for 1 minute. You must also incorporate pull-ups and dumbbell squats. These exercises keep your metabolism high and will allow you to burn fat even after the exercise.

But the bottom line is that many, many people will need to do something different from what they are doing now in order to get the most out of their workout routine.

Mistake #3: Think that because you purchased some type of exercise machine will make you get ripped abs, just because you have it. The magis is not in the machine, the magic (if any) is in the workout done by YOU, regularly, on the machine, and eating right.

Mistake #4: Being weak minded. Thinking that you can get a six pack without working hard is a myth. It does require a fair amount of exercise and work. You cannot get a six pack by wishing or thinking about it. You actually have to RUN, do the PUSH-UPS and replace fast food with broccoli soup! But if you are able to do these things, you’ll start to see a ripped midesction in less than 12 weeks!

Mistake #5: Thinking the hardest exercises are the best ones. You don’t need to do some crazy, advanced, upside down workouts in order to get the ripped six pack abs you want. The best ab exercises are simple, effective and fun. Just do the normal ones, with the exception of crunches and sit-ups, they don’t work to well!

Hard ab exercises is a waste of time. They are frustrating, hard to do and often kill your motivation to continue, since you can’t do them properly. It’s about building strength and having good form, not winning the academy awards of crazy ab workouts.

If there was just one area on your body that you could change, what would it be?  If you are like the majority of clients I have worked with over the years, it would be the lower portion of your abs (around your belly button level).   

I have new clients come to me all the time asking me how they can lose stubborn lower ab fat. Fortunately for them I know a few tricks but first I like to clear up a few myths about the lower abs.

The first thing I tell my clients is that their “lower abs” don’t actually exist. The rectus abdominis is the entire region (and one muscle) which when strengthened we refer to as the “6 pack“.

The front of your abdomen is covered by the rectus muscle and for this reason it’s always been a highly controversial topic whether or not you can use an exercise to train just one part of this muscle.

Let’s get to the bottom of this…the truth is that you can’t isolate just one part of the rectus with an ab exercise but research has shown that it is possible to put greater emphasis on a certain area of the rectus depending on your exercise.

The researchers who discovered this fact used EMG studies to measure muscle fiber activity during different abdominal exercises.  Their findings were interesting.  They discovered that abdominal exercises involving more hip flexion (i.e. reverse crunches) activated the lower portion of the rectus more than ab exercises that involved more trunk flexion (i.e. crunches). 

I want to clarify what a hip flexion dominant exercise is before we move along.

Hip flexion lower ab exercises are done when the thighs are brought to the trunk during an exercise. These exercises mainly work your rectus abdominis but more importantly they seem to target the lower ab area the most. Many of my clients experience lower ab soreness when they perform these hip flexion exercises which leads me to believe that they are they best bet for targeting the lower abs.

Alright, now for the good stuff!  Im going to share with you some of the best lower ab exercises around.  Ill also include a detailed description so you can perform each technique properly.  Here they are, from easiest to most difficult: 

Low Ball Pull In- Start with feet on Swiss ball and hands on the floor in front in a push-up position-do not let your hips sag. Bring knees into chest while maintaining a neutral spine. Contract abs then extend legs back out into the starting position. Repeat.

Hanging Knee Raise- Grasp chin up bar with an overhand grip, pull knees up into chest and lower back down slowly until you have returned to the starting position. Continue until you achieve repetition goal.

Rocky Abs- Lie on your back on a bench.  Reach above your head and grab onto the underside of the bench to brace yourself.  Lift your legs up until your hips (and legs) are at a 90 degree angle with your torso.  Now lift your hips straight up, bringing your feet towards the ceiling.   

At this point, the only parts of your body that should be on the bench are your head, shoulders and UPPER back.  This is the starting position.  Now lower your legs until they are parallel to the floor, while keeping your hips up and off the bench.  Return them to starting position and repeat. 

There you have it!  These three lower ab exercises are some of my favorites.  I must warn you that they are not easy movements.  They require hard work.  But I promise that the hard work will pay off and you’ll soon be on your way to a great six pack!

The first of these exercises for abs is called the abdominal hold. To do this ab exercise correctly, please:  

1) Sit tall on the edge of a sturdy chair, placing your hands on the edge with your fingers pointing towards your knees.

2) Tighten your abs and bring your toes 2 to 4 inches off of the ground, lifting your butt off of the chair.

3) Hold this position for five to ten seconds.

4) Lower yourself down and repeat the exercise for one whole minute.

Pretty easy, wasn’t it? Now, here is another one of the best exercises for abs. This one is called the `Side Crunch’. To do this other excercise for your abs properly, please:  

1) Kneel on the floor and lean all the way over to your right side, placing your right palm on the floor.

2) While keeping your weight balanced, slowly extend your left leg while pointing your toes.

3) Place your left hand behind your head, pointing your elbow towards the ceiling.

4) Next, slowly lift your leg to hip height as you extend your arm above your leg, with your palm facing forward.

5) Look out over your hand while bringing the left side of your rib cage towards your hip.

6) Lower yourself back down to starting position and repeat 6-8 more times. Do two more sets and then switch sides.

So there you have it, two very good exercises for abs that target your rectus abdominis better than most other exercises for abs out there. Of course, other exercises are out there, too, such as the reverse crunch or the bicycle exercise, but these two are surely good enough to get you started. Along with a balanced diet and good determination, these two exercises for abs will surely start you on your journey towards great abs.

The Best Way To Do Pilates Abs Exercises

Joseph Pilates created Pilates exercises during World War One. These exercises are primarily designed to strengthen and maintain a more appealing looking stomach and glutes. Flexibility, body posture, and strengthening all the muscles of the body are also key benefits to doing Pilates.

When performing an exercise such as leg raises you would do around 20 reps as opposed to 50 because you would tire less quickly and be able to perform the movement more precisely and hold each rep for a longer period of time, thus receiving a greater benefit.


Before undertaking any exercise program, you should always consult a physician to see if it will work for you and fit your particular health needs. You should never start an exercise program before you examine the risks that are involved and always start slow and work yourself up to where you want to be.
