Hey David! I’m glad you decided to post a comment. I agree with a lot of what you are saying and I promise to check back in in another 30 days after I’m done. I appreciate your honesty and your criticism because just hearing someone rant about a moment’s success is so lopsided. I’d like to address some of your points.
1) "I never really made it past the failures."- I’d like to hear more about this personally. As far as my experience goes, have you read those days in the past 3 weeks where I’ve been down on myself and failed? Take Friday for example where I failed so badly I had nothing to write about. How did I get past that failure? By kicking its ass on Saturday!
2) "…maybe she thinks you’re boring after getting to know you, or hurts your ego in some extreme way – its hard to be optimistic about that…"- Here’s a quick true story from my professional life. A guy I used to work with called me over into a meeting room just him and I. He proceeded to tell me how I was the biggest jerk in the world and how he felt like I was up in his business too much. This was the first time I had heard about it but that day or the day after he quit.
My response? I immediately apologized to him and asked him questions about why he felt that way. I also offered my own examples of what I felt I did that could give him that impression. I told him I was sorry because I actually really respected him and the reason I competed with him is because I felt he was so much better than me that he was practically untouchable. This experience hurt and it also made me a better person and didn’t stop me from continuing to pursue becoming more involved with people.
I don’t believe in feeding my ego. It’s warm and cushy sometimes and like everyone else sometimes I believe my own sales pitch WAY too much. Ego knocks are opportunities to tune myself into reality. There’s a lot to be positive about in regards to hits to your ego.
3) "…although your ideas seem so simple and perfect now, I really want to see how you feel in 60 days…"- I understand you wanting to see long term results before committing yourself to doing something that’s scary. If it were me I probably wouldn’t care either way. I mean it took me a year or two to finally commit to doing this. It’s honestly just WAY hard. Maybe this stuff just isn’t for you or maybe you’re just not ready for this intense of an exercise.
I don’t mean any disrespect by the title of my post. When I say losers are made of excuses, that doesn’t apply to anyone who isn’t making an excuse for themselves or rationalizing why they shouldn’t do this. Maybe you have a different or better plan that you’re following to improve your life. That’s awesome. I’m referring more to my mindset before I started this. The one where I didn’t have any good reason to not do it for a year or two and worked in smaller baby steps until I could finally make the commitment.
4) "I seem to go through phases of extreme motivation (like after reading Tim Ferriss’s book, 4HWW)" Here’s an example of how I got too cocky after reading the book. I made a bad business deal and lost a couple grand in cash. My rent almost bounced and I had to scramble to correct my dumb mistake with my credit card of all things. Here I think is where there’s a big divergence between our attitudes right now. I see that as a positive. But thank god it was only a couple grand and that I was able to recover. I consider that a cheap lesson in male ego.
David, I haven’t lived your life and living life is such a personal experience (this was actually a personal experience essay ironically). My only goal for those reading this is to make sure that you are honest with yourselves regarding whether or not you are living life to the fullest. You’re the best judge of your own happiness and self worth, who the hell am I to tell you differently? As I say in this post, I’m just some guy.
Keep in touch man, I sincerely liked reading your comment.
